We live in an extraordinary time, where increased longevity allows us to glimpse — perhaps even climb — our Second Mountain. This is a journey many of our ancestors never had the opportunity to take, constrained by the demands of daily survival, relentless work, and shorter lifespans.
Today, many of us have reached the peak of our First Mountain — our careers or the work that has driven our sense of purpose. The moment of reaching that peak is exhilarating, filled with pride and the rewards of years of dedication and sacrifice. But then what? We are still young. We have a whole lifetime ahead of us. What comes next? Retirement? This is the question many are asking themselves and their career or executive coaches.
This moment of uncertainty, this “Now What?” — is what I call the Bridge.
The Bridge is the path that connects the familiar terrain of the First Mountain to the ascent of the Second Mountain. And this Second Mountain? It represents the deeper purpose for which we are truly here. It is where we align with our soul’s mission and contribute to humanity in ways we were always meant to.
No two Bridges are the same. Each person’s journey is unique — the length, the width, the hurdles, and the challenges vary for everyone.
Crossing this Bridge requires transformation. It demands shedding the layers we accumulated while climbing the First Mountain — the identities, beliefs, and habits that once served us but now weigh us down. As we let go of these layers, we become lighter. We regain access to our inner compass, the intuition that has always guided us but may have been muffled by external expectations.
This inner compass — once unburdened — becomes our North Star, leading us toward the Second Mountain, where we fulfill our soul’s mission in ways we never imagined.
To successfully cross the Bridge, consider these essential steps:
- Trust your inner compass. It knows the way.
- Release the past. Let go of what no longer serves you.
- Celebrate your past achievements — but don’t cling to them. They are milestones, not destinations.
- Surround yourself with the right people. Build a circle of supporters who uplift you, and kindly release those who no longer align with your journey.
- Eliminate fear. It is the greatest barrier on the Bridge — and you no longer need it.
- Move forward with love and joy. Every step is part of the adventure toward your Second Mountain.
